Have you ever wondered which books to pick at the library? Or what book to give as a gift to a child?

Our list of recommended children’s books here can guide you. Download it here.

Four times a year — in January (Winter), April (Spring), July (Summer), October (Fall) — we post new lists here. You can download and print them and take them to a library or bookstore.

Best Books Fall

These lists are prepared by Dr. Kathleen S. Ralph, a children’s literature specialist at Whittier College, Whittier, CA. Dr. Ralph loves children’s books and has a huge collection of them.

In these lists, we group the books by the age at which children often enjoy them. It’s fine for children to read books listed for children who are younger or older than they are. So let your child’s interests be the guide.

The truth is that some books for toddlers are enjoyed by adults!

We suggest you put the lists in the TOOLS & RESOURCES section of your Way to Go! FamilyLearningJournal (TM) so you can find them when you want them.

"Some of my favorite childhood memories are of reading many of the books on these BEST BOOKS lists. Even now, I remember details about the books that my parents read to me when I was six! The memories that your family will create when reading together will last forever."

- Ariel, age 16
